• 2007 29er Midwinters East
  • February 11th, Day 3
Sarasota Bay provided morning wind for the first time during this regatta to allow the fleet to race before the 1:30pm cutoff time. Two races were sailed in a dying, shifty easterly of about 5-8 knots. In the first race the 2nd place team of Judge Ryan and Hans Henken attacked the leaders Emily Dellenbaugh and Briana Provancha by sailing into a small hole to leeward of the girls on the starting line and pinching to force them off to the unfavored right side of the course. Hans and Judge went left and managed to round the weather mark in 2nd, behind Ian Simms and David Liebenberg who had sailed fast to the left shift and puff. Meanwhile, Emily and Briana did their best to come back from the right to round in the 20s. By the finish line Judge and Hans had passed Ian and David to take the lead while Emily and Briana had worked hard to make it up to 8th.

In the second race Emily and Briana were prepared for Judge and Hans' attack (they again started to leeward). This time the girls perservered and rounded the weather mark in first. Judge and Hans made it past the girls on the first run and went along to win the race, Emily and Briana finishing second.

By the finish of the second race the breeze was quite light and shifty so the RC decided it was time to call it a day. Congratulations to Nicolas Kroeger / Peter Soosalo and Alanna Foscarini / Alison Ludzki who will represent Canada in the 2007 Youth World Championship this summer.

Another onshore postponment kept the fleet on land this morning but only until 11:30am. The breeze filled Sarasota bay quickly and the fleet was soon racing. Emily Dellenbaugh and Briana Provancha put the pedal to the medal today sailing fast and smart to win four of the five races (placing 3rd in the fifth race showing they were indeed human).

The first three races were held in 4-7 knots and increasing chop as increasing numbers of cruisers and fishermen came out to enjoy the day. The wind momentarily died off and PRO Alan Broadbrib again showed incredible forsight (or luck?) as he held the fleet on the water for 30 minutes before a fresh 10-12 knots filled in. Two more races were held in this breeze, bringing smiles to everyones faces now that they were planing around quickly. In the fifth race, the Bermudian team of Oliver Riihiluoma and Peter Miller (who have already qualified for the Youth Worlds) as well as the Sweedish team of Charlie Ekberg and Johan Wersall passed Emily and Briana at the 2nd weather mark when the girls had a tough time with their set.

    Top five after day 2:
    1. Emily Dellenbaugh and Briana Provancha
    2. Judge Ryan and Hans Henken
    3. Oliver Riihiluoma and Peter Miller
    4. Charlie Eckberg and Johan Wersall
    5. Ian Simms and David Liebenberg

    Racing continues through Sunday (tomorrow).
  • February 9th, Day 1
The fleet was held on shore this morning as the early easterly died out and the afternoon sea breeze filled from the north. Thanks to PRO Alan Broadbrib for keeping us on shore instead of waiting for wind on the water.

Once the racing was underway 31 boats sailed 3 races in 4-10 knots. Ian Simms and David Liebenberg won the first race handily after starting at the pin and getting to the favored left side of the course. Judge Ryan and Hans Henken, fresh from the World Championship in Argentina, finished 2nd.

The second race brought a bit more breeze initially, but by the second half of the race the wind velocity was on its way down for the afternoon. Emily Dellenbaugh and Briana Provancha, also fresh from the World Championship, lead this race from start to finish. Judge and Hans again finished second but this time by a very close margin. Finally, the third and lightest race of the day Judge and Hans were able to get ahead up the first beat and never look back. Emily and Briana, who went back after starting to clear themselves, thinking they were OCS (although they weren't), fought their way back through the fleet to finish 2nd.

The Canadian sailors are using this event as their Youth World Championship qualifier for the 2007 Youth World Championship held in Kingston, Ontario.
